1. Steven Krivit at New Energy Times has written another two articles where he asserts that Rossi and his energy catalyzer are a fraud. Energy Catalzyer: Extraordinary Scams Require Extraordinary Claims I don’t doubt the legitimacy ...
On Friday, we told you about a potentially revolutionary new technology that was about to undergo its first trial in Italy: called the E-Cat, it supposedly combines hydrogen and nickel using a catalyst to generate heat (and electricity) without any radiation or carbon emissions. So, has society been revolutionized over the weekend? Not quite. Over the weekend, the E-Cat cold fusion power generator reportedly ran for 5.5 hours, producing about 470 kilowatts of electricity. It was supposed to output one megawatt, but some “technical issue” prevented full power operation. Well, fine, okay, that’s still 470 kilowatts of power from effectively nothing, so not bad, right? Not quite: according to a witness (and apparent believer in the E-Cat technology), there was one other notable issue with the test: “Probably the biggest opening for skeptics will be the continually running genset that is probably rated for 500 kW (my guess), and...
By Derek Lowe I occasionally cover odd attempts at alternative – very alternative – energy sources here, because there’s a chemistry angle to many of them. The various cold fusion claims have always gotten a slightly less frosty reception among professional chemists than among professional physicists, on average. And yes, there are two good explanations of that, which are not mutually exclusive: (1) that the chemists are willing to be a bit more open-minded since (among other things) they have less invested in the state of physics as it is, and (2) that the chemists are willing to be more open-minded because they know less about physics. So far, the track record on these things has been pretty close to 100% hardtack disappointment, dry as dust and crunchy as hell. But as Tyler Cowen put it over at Marginal Revolution, the expected value of such things is so high...

So, it turns out that any concerns you might have had over Harold Camping’s prediction that the world would end on October 21, can now be put aside: The world is still here (as far as I can determine) and humanity is still busy going about it’s evil ways which involve consuming energy at a staggering rate … and that leads me nicely to this week’s revisiting of the topic of my blog posting two weeks ago, “Hello Cheap Energy, Hello Brave New World“. As I discussed in that posting, an inventor by the name of Andrea Rossi has developed what he claims to be a simple system for generating what would be, essentially, endless and incredibly cheap energy. On October 28th the biggest test of Rossi’s system, which is called the E-Cat, was conducted in Italy and some results were made public which I’ll discuss in a moment....
E-Cat: test riuscito.
Very Likely Not Real, But Still. . .(The E-Cat)CoranteThe latest headline-grabber is a mysterious thingie from Italy called the E-Cat, which I mentioned briefly here back in July. The inventors apparently concluded a larger-scale demonstration over the...
